As shown in the above figure, the exterior circumferential wall 10 forming the housing of a head/disk assembly (HDA) has a particle sampling port 12, the axis of which is aligned generally with the direction of air flow, indicated by arrow 14, caused by rotation of the rotating disk 16. Because the particle sampling port 12 is aligned generally parallel with the direction 14 of air flow, the particle count for the sampled air in the HDA is more representative of the actual count of particles flowing in the circumferential region of the rotating disk 16.
