Automatic Analysis of Error Records in a Communication Controller for Optimum Maintenance

This article describes a method which allows human errors in the analysis of the box errror records of a communication controller to be reduced and the delay due to parts delivery to be suppressed. This is done thanks to an automatic analysis of the error records by the service processor and to the generation of a reference code pointing to the faulty unit. The reference code is displayed at the network host for transmission by the customer to the maintenance organization. Up to now, in communication controllers, when a hardware fault occurs, the errors caused by this fault are detected by various mechanisms and a box error record (BER), which includes data collected at the time the error is logged in the BER file on the service processor MOSS disk.
