Abstract

A method is described which automatically prompts the user with the next step in defining a query in the pre-defined sequence of steps. Previous prompted query proposals forced the user to know what step should be taken next in defining a query. Since the functional design of prompted query is to not require a user to have in-depth knowledge of SQL syntax and semantic knowledge, this method automatically prompts the user through the steps in defining a query. A pictorial view of the prompting sequence for defining a query, as defined in the method, is shown in the figure. The '//' in the figure denotes the assisted navigation process which allows the user to continue the normal sequence, change the sequence, or cancel out of the prompting sequence.
