This article describes a color facsimile terminal for attachment to the telephone switched network. Hard copy photographs are produced on POLAROID* films. A medium resolution image is created by thermally addressing chirol nematic liquid crystal material. At the pel (picture element) level, this material behaves as a "tunable" color filter. Color filter peak is a function of applied heat. Typical temperature/ color range for one liquid crystal mixture is shown in Fig. 1. (Image Omitted) Device construction of the color panel is shown in Fig. 2. The liquid crystal material is sandwiched between two glass substrates covered on their inner faces by two sets of orthogonal electrodes. Both x and y electrodes (ITo) act as heating resistors.
