In an automated teller machine (ATM) with a check deposit/cashing mechanism, a printer is available to print transaction data on the face of the check and a MICR reader is available to read the account information printed on the bottom of the check. Also, the mechanism has the ability to "back out" an inserted check through the insertion slot if it is inserted incorrectly by the consumer, or for any other reason. This disclosure is a method and program which uses the "back out" capability to pre-authorize or certify a consumer's personal check. The check is inserted by the consumer into the check depository and the consumer selects "pre-authorization" from the display screen and enters the check amount and verifies the account number via the keyboard.
