Abstract

By measuring the relative conductance of the two sides of the junction of a conductor and an IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) the misalignment of the conductor and the connector element can be determined. (Image Omitted) Where a flat or ribbon cable with a number of aligned conductors are joined to one or more rows of IDC elements, the cumulative effects of manufacturing tolerances may result in misalignment of some of the connector elements with the matching wires in the cable. The resulting connections may cause failures which are detrimental to the reliability of this type of connector. To detect this type of failure mode, the relative conductance of the two sides of such a connection are measured and their ratio is determined. The further this ratio is from unity, the less reliable is the juncture performance.
