An improved, flexible integrated configuration method for X.21 link protocol is described. The method allows the user to configure the IBM RT/PC work station for an X.21 network with a menu-driven interface. Two logical link types are configurable -- SDLC (Synchronous Data Link Control) and Ethernet*. The SDLC logical link protocol can run on one of three physical link protocols -- RS232, Smart Modem or X.21. If the user selects X.21, any of the user-defined X.21 profiles can be changed, deleted, added, etc. No other profile type(s) need to be configured to reach the panels containing X.21 information. Thus, RT/PC can be configured for X.21 at the time the rest of the physical network facility is configured or added on later.
