A standardized overall design concept for automated work cells provides the advantages of common equipment usage while permitting personalization to accommodate diverse manufacturing processes. The figure shows a typical embodiment of this design concept. A Base 1 provides a rigid and stable mounting surface for all workpiece- handling equipment and tooling. Input and Output Conveyors 2 and 3 provide the means for delivery and exit of totes or pallets carrying workpieces. Transfer Units 4 are provided to move totes or pallets to the Lift And Locate Unit 5 which provides the means for repeatable, positive location for access to workpieces, for processing, by robots or other tools. Each Conveyor has the capacity for three totes or pallets.
