There are generally two distinct areas on a disk file performance curve, a curve that shows response time vs. operations per second. One is the area where the number of operations per second from the system is small and the response time is relatively constant. The other is the area where the number of operations per second is large and the response time is increasing, generally in an exponential fashion, as the operations per second increase. Most systems encounter heavy loads during certain peak periods or continually operate with heavy loads. During these periods continued good response times are desired.
