Testing Technique for Multi-Track Magnetic Heads

The system that accommodates high density recording heads produces write saturation curves on multi-track heads without dismounting the head from association with the media for erasure of the media. A ramped write current waveform is applied to the heads and then read back. The data read is a bipolar amplitude display of the magnetic head output versus the write current. The optimum write current is readily observable from the read data together with the shape of the write saturation curve. The write saturation curves can then be extracted from this data. The curves are developed by digitizing the bipolar amplitude waveform, taking the absolute value, and then averaging. Critical curve values obtained through this method have been found to be very close to the shape of the curves developed by a conventional method.
