Hardware for Realtime Decompression of Numerical Control Data

This article describes a circuit arrangement for decompressing bit mapped numerical control (NC) data in realtime without the use of software. Computer automated manufacturing frequently places high demands upon the information storage capability of the controlling minicomputers. One method for alleviating this problem, using ideas from the space program telemetry system, is the compression of binary data into a smaller volume containing the same amount of information as the original dataset. The development of software compression algorithms has enabled large datasets to be significantly reduced in size, thereby off loading system storage requirements. The data may be restored to its original form by decompressing it, again, via software.
