Pneumatic Surface-Mounted Device Delivery System

This article describes an air assisted gravity feed delivery system for assembly of surface-mounted devices (SMDs) on printed circuit (PC) boards which is more positive than pure gravity feed and eliminates electrical vibrators. The mechanism used in the delivery system is shown in the perspective view of Fig. 1. A component track 1 guides the SMDs to a specific output location. Each SMD track is designed to handle several rows of SMDs and can be arranged to ensure that a proper supply of SMDs is available. A stop 2 is adjusted to ensure that the SMDs will be properly positioned for pick up. (Image Omitted) A slotted air shield 3 is utilized to allow air to be blown on the SMDs and push them down the track while preventing them from being blown out of the track or stacking up.
