In order to change the real device configuration of an IBM Virtual Machine/System Product (VM/SP) System, the system must be taken down, a file (DMKRIO) must be modified and reassembled, the system must be rebuilt and re-initial microcode loaded. A modification of the real device configuration may be performed to the system, without interrupting the operation of the system, in the following manner. The modification is accomplished by creating a virtual memory space sufficiently large to contain an entire real device configuration. The space is used to contain the real configuration control blocks that are created dynamically. Only those portions of the virtual space currently in use need be kept in real memory; the rest is available for use without the need for an expansion algorithm, but does not take up real memory space.
