A print buffering algorithm allows a printer controller to personalize itself to a wide range of printer types so that each printer can be used effectively in a multi-tasking environment without the need to modify the printer controller. The concept is described in the following. The printer controller is one of several services dispatched by the supervisor as required. To keep the system operating efficiently, the printer controller must take into account the relatively slow operating speed of the printer as compared to the central processor and the rest of the system. It must complete the print job as quickly as possible without tieing up the rest of the system in the process.
