A CMOS preamplifier/clocked amplifier or a dynamic sense amplifier/ clocked amplifier receiver convert small interface signals such as found in systems using Emitter Coupled Logic (ECL) to the large signals used for complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices with high speed and with good tolerances to parametric variations. The receivers can be used in synchronous applications as amplifiers of off-chip or on-chip small interface signals to on-chip logic levels. Clocked amplifiers can convert small signal inputs to large signal logic levels and can also develop drive for on-chip bussing much faster than can the more standard asynchronous receivers followed by asynchronous tapered inverters. An example of the receiver approaches is shown in Fig. 1.
