Abstract

This article describes a Fire-Code Decoding technique which can reduce the number of gates (about 350 gates per 48 bits compared to a bidirectional shift register) of a Fire Code decoding circuit by the following: (1) The generator polynomial used in detecting the error location and the error pattern is reversed to the generator polynomial used in detecting whether or not data read from a disk has errors. (Image Omitted) (2) The positions of code bits in a shift register of the decoding circuit when detecting the error location and the error pattern are reversed to the position of code bits in the shift register of the decoding circuit when detecting whether or not the data read from the disk has an error.
