For initial IPL (initial program load) and diagnostic functions, some form of operator panel is required in a computer system. Early members of the IBM System 36 (S/36) family (5360, 5362) had a physical operator panel as part of the basic machine. The S36/PC (5364, and IBM System 36 with a directly attached IBM PC or personal computer) improved the (Image Omitted) operator panel concept by implementing a "soft" panel. For the S/36/PC the soft panel utilized the directly attached personal computer to control the panel functions. Hence, rather than control the machine with a series of switches and a light-emitting diode (LED) display, a full-function operator screen was available. From a user perspective, there is no reason why the panel functions need to be limited to a specific workstation.
