Magnetic Current Switch

This article describes a device for switching current flow from one terminal to another via a small external magnetic field. A heterostructure device is disclosed herein which will switch current flow from one conducting channel to another upon the application of a magnetic field normal to the current flow direction. This device can be used to switch the current applied to light emitting diodes and other devices on the same chip. An embodiment of the structure is shown in the drawing. The device is essentially a modulation-doped heterostructure with a high mobility 2-dimensional electron gas (DEG) separated from a low- mobility, highly-doped layer of either electrons or holes.
