This article describes a portable terminal which permits on-the-spot identification of individuals making such business transactions as credit card purchases, food stamp redemption and Social Security check cashing. With reference to Fig. 1, the sequence of events for a transaction (initiated by a sales person) would be as follows. The type of transaction is selected from a menu presented on the LC display 10. The user passes his magnetic stripe card through a reader slot 12 and signs his name on the stylus input pad 14. Magnetic card and digitized signature information as well as the amount of the transaction would be transmitted via an internal modem (Fig. 2) to the central clearing house for the type of transaction selected.
