In an automated manufacturing line it is often necessary to have multiple workstations perform identical tasks in order to achieve a required output volume. The "identical tasks" may be repeated identical operations on a single workpiece, or identical operations performed on multiple workpieces, grouped together on a pallet, handled as one workpiece. The cycle time for a single operation determines the number of workstations needed to meet the required production rate.
