Adaptable, Self-aligning Encore Assembly
An encoder assembly can be mounted on a plurality of standard DC motors
without any special tool for the motor while obtaining alignment of the encoder
assembly on the bearing hub of the motor.
A sensor housing 1 has a snap mount 2 at one end for gripping a bearing hub
3 of a DC motor 4. The sensor housing 1 supports LEDs on one side of an
emitter disc 5, which is attached to a shaft 5' of the motor 4, and photosensor
devices on the other side of the emitter disc 5 with the emitter disc 5 rotating
through a pair of slots 6 in the housing 1. The housing 1 has a photosensor
device aperture slot 7 and an LED mounted in end part 8 of housing 1 in
alignment with the slot 7.
The sensor housing 1 has locator pins 9 extending therefrom for cooperation
with recesses 10 in a printed circuit board 11 to support the printed circuit board
11, which is electrically and mechanically connected to the motor 4 by being
soldered to brush terminals 12 of the motor 4. The printed circuit board 11 also
is glued to the motor 4 after having the brush terminals 12 soldered thereto.
An encoder cover 13 has latches 14 for disposition within slots 15 in the
printed circuit board 11 to retain the cover 13 in position.
The printed circuit board 11 has a capacitor 16, a resistor 17, a pair of
inductances 18, and a header 19 mounted thereon for use with the motor 4.
