Method of Making Dendritic Surface for Thin Film Based Cathode Ray Tube
The lifetime of thin film based cathode ray tubes can be extended by
providing a larger surface area (more material reservoir) for electron emission on
the cathode pad.
The larger surface area can be provided by the following
1. A thin metallic film (i.e., tungsten or molybdenum) is blank
deposited onto a substrate (sapphire) surface by electron beam.
2. An excimer laser beam is then directed at the deposited
metallic surface whereby said laser beam forms an irregularly
patterned particle mask of the metal overlayer.
3. The excimer laser is then powered to etch away the exposed
substrate areas, while the areas covered by the metallic thin film
mask remain unetched. This generates a selectively etched dendritic
structure on the substrate surface.
Where multiple cathode pads are positioned on the same substrate base, the
metallic thin films can be deposited selectively by lithography onto the cathode

cathode surface prohibits the occasional drifting of the oxide coatings.
