Automatic Non-Optical Beam Current Balance for Multiple Beam Cathode
Individual beam currents in a multiple beam cathode ray tube (MBCRT) can
be automatically balanced without disruption of the displayed image. The beam
current is sensed entirely by electronic means.
In operation, a sense element is placed near the nominal path of the beam
array. Under normal operation i has no effect on the beams, or it can be used as
part of the electron optical system. When a beam current measurement is
desired the beam array is driven off the nominal path, by any means, so that it
strikes the sense element. Simultaneously, all beams are biased off except for
the one to be measured, the test beam. A suitable drive signal is then applied to
the test beam such that the beam current characteristic can be determined. This
characteristic is then electronically stored as a reference to the drive circuitry for
that beam until it is measured again. When the measurement is complete the
beam path is restored. This process is repeated a beam at a time whenever it is
deemed necessary by the operating system. For the case of gray scale video,
multiple measurements can be taken for each beam, one for bias, and one for
each level of current desired.
For display MBCRT's, all sensing may be done during the vertical retrace
period when the sources are not otherwise in use.
