Abstract

A water-soluble polymer coating is applied over a part prior to honing to protect an elastomer from honing oil contamination and allow fluorinated cleaning agents to be used to remove the oil without swelling the elastomer. When the oil has been removed, the protective polymer coating is removed from the elastomer in running water or in an ultrasonic detergent cleaner bath.
