The technique of measuring bearing preload is a pragmatic approach to monitoring and controlling the level of axial interference between bearing pairs. It is particularly suited for use in a direct access storage device (DASD) assembly where uniform performance cannot be achieved without a constant degree of axial bearing stiffness.
