compliance measurement capabilities. It does not, however, require an additional
transducer to be attached to the slider.
An air bearing slider, of any design, is fabricated of a piezoelectric material
(e.g., lead zirconate titanate, zinc oxide, quartz). As shown in the figure, the
slider body is constructed completely of a piezoelectric material. There are very
thin metal electrodes 2 deposited on the top of the slider for the purpose of
attaching electrical leadwires.
This slider can be easily fabricated in the design of any existing slider by
simply substituting the piezoelectric material in place of the standard slider
material in the fabrication processes. The machining techniques would not be
changed, since most piezoelectric ceramic materials and slider ceramic materials
have very similar mechanical material properties.
The piezoelectric slider has a very high signal-to-noise ratio because of the
large volume of piezoelectric material present. The fact that no transducer is
present in addition to the piezoelectric slider allows this slider to dynamically
perform in the same way as a standard slider of the same design. Thus, it is well
suited to applications where high sensitivity acceleration or contact
measurements are needed without loss of dynamic similitude due to attached
