Method for Realignment of a Printer Motor When the Motor is Stopped
This method discloses a technique for tracking the movement of a printer
motor when it is off and realigning the motor to its original stopped position.
Printer motors are typically positioned by using binary code to indicate the
four forward positions of the motor and are represented by a binary string
"00101101" made of binary pairs "00", "10", "11" and "01". As the motor shaft
moves forward, the binary code for the next position is fed to a microprocessor.
Thus, if the fed value is "10", the motor is positioned at "00", and the next forward
value to be fed is "11". Backward motion is indicated by inversion of the forward
motion representation, i.e., "00101101" is inverted to "11010010".
In operation, after stopping the motor a motion sensor is activated and it
detects whether there has been motion by the motor in one or more increments
in either direction during the stoppage. If there is movement, the microprocessor
is signalled and the present tracking method is used. After saving the binary
code for forward motion ("00101101") and the last binary pair motor position
value in a register, the tracking method is activated and each binary pair is
compared to the saved last motor position value. If a match occurs, the next pair
in the string is compared to the current position value, and if they match, the
motor will be moved forward. An accumulator is then adjusted with a positive
