Wax Impregnated Web for Ink Jet Nozzle Maintenance Station
A simple maintenance station for an ink jet nozzle is described which
performs the functions of a CAP, PURGE, SPIT AND WIPE. The station
comprises a split web tape, half of which is wax impregnated.
The maintenance station comprises a tape 1 which is directed from a supply
reel 2 on a path between platen 3 and the ink jet print head 4 to a take-up reel 5.
In order to perform all the maintenance functions, the tape 1 is divided into an
upper half 6 and a lower half 7. Each half 6, 7 is the height of the nozzle array.
The upper half 6 of the tape 1 is an uncoated porous, lint-free web, and the lower
half 7 of the tape 1 uses the same base web impregnated with a PTFE/PE
microcrystalline wax. When the wax impregnated half of the tape wipes the
nozzle plate, the nozzle plate is coated with wax thereby making it non-wetting to
the ink and non-sticking to paper fiber and dust.
In operation, when the nozzle first enters the maintenance station the upper
unimpregnated half 6 of the tape is used to WIPE the nozzle plate and is also
used for the SPIT and PURGE functions. The lower half 7 of the tape is used to
CAP the nozzle plate. Because it is soft and compliant and non-wetting, the tape
can be brought into contact with the nozzle plate without fear of wicking the ink
into the tape. The wax impregnated web greatly reduces evaporation of water
from the nozzle plate during any dormancy period of the printer. On star...
