Abstract

The use of a cobalt-platinum alloy as the magnetic layer in thin film magnetic recording disks is known for horizontal recording and for perpendicular recording. The perpendicular magnetic orientation of the CoPt alloy media can be improved with the use of a vacuum deposited gold underlayer formed on the disk substrate. When the CoPt alloy magnetic layer is sputter deposited onto an evaporated gold underlayer, the resulting disk exhibits perpendicular magnetic orientation with a perpendicular coercivity in a range of approximately 450 to 700 Oe and squareness as high as 0.9.
