Smoothing Film Coating Device
In a smoothing film coating device, the coating thickness is controlled by
varying the length of the smoothing flap of film.
The flexible web substrate 10 to be coated is guided over rollers 11 and 12,
as the web moves in the direction of arrow 15. These rollers may be driven
rollers or idler rollers. A coating head 13 applies coating ink to one surface of the
web at a location adjacent roller 11.
A third roller 14 carries a thin, flexible, plastic smoothing film 16 which
adheres to the coating ink and therefore follows the path of web 10 around roller 12. Roller 14 is bi-directionally rotatable about its axis, as indicated by arrow 17.
A manual or automatic means (not shown) is provided to measure the
thickness of the coating downstream of the end 20 of film 16. If the coating is too
thin, roller 14 is rotated (manually or automatically) in a clockwise direction so as
to shorten the length of the film, thus causing the thickness of the coating to
increase, and the coating width to decrease. If the coating is too thick, roller 14
is rotated counterclockwise to lengthen the film. As a result, the coating is
coated thinner and wider.
