This invention relates to a method for the entry and coded representation of iconic characters into an information handling system by way of keystroking a keyboard of N-distinguishable keys coupling said system. The method comprises the steps of (a) forming a concordance between K iconic characters and a selected pair of the N(N-1) distinguishable pairs of keys, the concordance being coded such that each one of the K & K characters are associated one to one with K & K actuations of a first key of the pair, while a second key of the pair, when actuated, is a stop code; (b) repeating step (a) for as many as MN(N-1) distinguishable iconic character sets; and (c) ordering the keys according to at least one criterion such as frequency of use.
