In-Situ Resistance Measurements for High Transition Temperature Material
This article describes an apparatus to monitor the progress of the thermal
treatment of perovskite-like high transition temperature superconductors by in-
situ resistance measurement.
The apparatus for in-situ resistance measurements disclosed herein is shown
in the perspective view of Fig. 1. It consists of a long ceramic sleeve with at least
two parallel holes running down its entire length. Thick wire made of platinum-
rhodium alloy is passed through two of the holes. At one end of the sleeve each
wire is twisted into about one and one half coils of a spring. The sample to be
measured is inserted into the coils which make good contact because of their
tension. Fig. 2 is a cross section across A-A of Fig. 1 showing the sample held in
the coils. The sample may be inserted with equal success in ovens up to at least
850oC, or into a cryostat (Dewar) at 4.2K, and a two probe measurement of the
sample resistance recorded on a chart or micro computer. Changes in
resistance, which may signal such events as crystallization, oxygen absorption,
or strain relaxation, may then be monitored by means of an ohmmeter.
This apparatus is especially convenient in that it is not necessary to remount
the sample when going from very high temperatures to very low temperatures.
The sample can be moved from the furnace to the Dewar within a few minutes
without removing the contacts.
