A method of drilling small holes, such as on the order of .05 millimeters in diameter, with precision placement is provided and generally comprises: etching a pilot hole of slightly smaller diameter than is finally desired with a laser under the x-y control of a computer; etching a hole of a smaller diameter than that of the pilot hole concentric to and at the bottom of the pilot hole; drilling the desired small hole on the order of .05 millimeters in diameter with a drill of the desired diameter which is guided and centered by the etched holes. The provided method is in contrast to the slower, less accurate conventional method of using a precision drilling table and spindle which is typically unable to perform center punch operations resulting in holes less than .13 millimeters in diameter.
