Novel UV Curing Process for Conducting Polymer And Its Application
Ultraviolet light is used to initiate a polymerization of 1, 3-
dihydroisothianaphthene to form a conducting polymer which is useful in surface
The 1, 3-dihydroisothianaphthene is prepared by reacting - ' - dibromo-o-
xylene with anhydrous sodium sulfide in absolute ethanol to form a liquid at room
temperature. A layer of liquid 1, 3-dihydroisothianaphthene is spread on a glass
slide and exposed to a 253 nm UV light. Using a light intensity which is not
strong, a gel is formed in a few hours. A solid polymer film is obtained by heating
the gel 10 to 20 minutes at a temperature of 80 degrees - 90 degrees centigrade.
The film exhibits a conductivity above 10-3 S/cm after exposure to iodine vapor
for a minute. The UV curable conducting polymer does not require metal filler.
In surface mounting applications, a monomer is applied to a printed circuit
board. The monomer is cured to form a gel polymer using UV light.
Components are placed on the printed circuit board and the polymer solidifies by
the application of heat.
