Less expensive cabling can be used by providing an active tailgate at the
juncture between a channel cable from a central processor and the electronics of
a connected control unit.
Referring to Fig. 1, an I/O channel cable from a central processor (not shown)
requires four serpentine connector blocks 1 at a control unit that can be
supported in a controller frame. Interposer card 2 with two signal planes has
serpentine pins soldered to one side for connection to blocks 1 and pins on the
other side for connection to card connector blocks 3 of active logic card 4. Card
4 carries the logic for one channel, such as a small buffer, select out bypass
circuits, channel interface circuits, and circuits for converting the channel data
bus into a bi-directional bus. Inexpensive, low performance cabling and
connectors can then be used to join this card to the central electronics of the
