A communications station has a receiver that is connected to an incoming line and a transmitter that is connected to an outgoing line. The receiver circuit uses a phase locked loop to extract timing information from the signal on the incoming line. The phase locked loop has a variable oscillator and a circuit for comparing the phase of the oscillator with the timing information extracted from the signal on the line. The oscillator frequency is adjusted to keep the oscillator in a selected phase relationship with the timing signal on the incoming line. These components are conventional.
