This article describes a design modification in the inverter/aligner interface

The figure illustrates the interface between inverter module 10 and aligner
module 11 with its associated aligner drive belt 12 and aligner guide 13.
Incorporated into inverter module 10 is paper roller drive 15 consisting of a shaft
and a series of drive rollers. The rear drive roller 16 (skewing roller) is spring
clutched with a one way clutch and is oversized by approximately 5% relative to
the other drive rolls.
In operation a skewed paper sheet 17 exiting inverter 10 is driven in a
counterclockwise direction as it enters aligner 11 by skewing roller 16, thus
preventing the rear edge of the sheet from striking aligner guide 13 and
becoming damaged. After paper sheet 17 enters the aligner, the normal aligning
of the sheet against the aligner guide is performed by aligner belt 12.
In the cycle when a paper sheet enters the inverter the one-way clutch
causes the skewing roller 16 to become inoperative allowing the sheet to pass
through without any skewing action.
