In conventional typewriters, paper is fed to the desired typing position by means of a platen roll, which is indexed by a series of gears to progressively move the paper line by line during typing. One drawback is that certain paper, especially index cards and envelopes, tend to conform to the shape of the roll, which is typically of rather small diameter. This can cause numerous problems.
