Abstract

It has become widely accepted that to avoid static friction (stiction) and increase the durability of a thin film magnetic recording disk with a carbon overcoat, mechanical texturing is necessary. While this process is known to be effective in reducing stiction and increasing durability, it is likely that corrosion resistance may be affected. Furthermore, this process increases the roughness of the disk and thus could not be easily extended to lower flying height disk file technology.
