Bucking Coil Actuator

The actuator shown in the Figure undergoes motion responsive to a repulsive force created between coils carrying current traveling in opposite directions. Since the actuator contains essentially an air core, the coil acceleration is not limited by the saturation characteristics of the magnetic core material, but rather is a function of the current squared. Therefore, the actuator is most advantageous for use at large currents and short pulse widths for providing rapid response times which are substantially faster than that achieved with conventional electromagnetic devices. The coils are designed such that the magnetic force is substantially constant over the nominal range of actuator travel.
