In certain types of sputtered thin film magnetic recording disks, it is desirable to mask an annular region of the disk substrate near the inside diameter (ID) during the sputtering. This can be accomplished by the use of a center plug having two sections. The sections are located on opposite sides of the disk substrate and are magnetically attached to each other through the center opening in the substrate. When latched together, each section provides a rim which overlaps the disk substrate at the ID to provide a mask over the desired annular portion of the disk substrate.
