Apparatus is described to measure static friction (stiction) at the head-disk
interface in a magnetic disk file.
The stiction measuring apparatus comprises an instrumented arm 1 which is
moved in a controlled manner to initiate the rotation of disks in disk file 2. A stop
member 3 is fixed to the spindle hub 4 in a position so that a predetermined small
space exists between the arm 1 and the stop member 3. The instrumented arm
is fixed to a linear motion apparatus 5 which is driven by a stepper motor 6. Four
semiconductor strain gages are mounted on the cantilever instrumented arm 1
and their output is fed to bridge amplifier 7 and to a digital storage oscilloscope 8
In operation, it is desired to simulate as closely as possible in the test, the
normal operating velocity profile of the file. This is accomplished by the small
space between arm 1 and stop member 3, which insures that the file is not
disturbed prior to the test, and the selected current profile fed to the stepper
motor 6 under control of signals developed in control card 9. The strain gages
are calibrated prior to the test by applying a known load so that the sensed data
can be correlated to the stiction force at the head/disk interface. Should addi-
ional tests be run for comparison, the position of the rotor should be returned to
the same position prior to the start of the test.
