Abstract

The two layer flexible tape carrier sometimes exhibits defects, such as curl, waviness, canoeing, and twist, with the more severe one being the curl in the direction of the polyimide. When the tape is placed on the footprint after excise and form operation, the leads are non-coplanar with the footprint. As the hot bar bonder descends on the outer leads of the device, it results in misalignment, unacceptable assembly and, hence, poor yields and throughput.
