Optical methods of measuring the quality of magnetic particle dispersion in magnetic inks suffer from the surface effects of the inks. Gloss measurements and visual inspections require examination of the ink surface in air. These methods are limited by the quality of the spread of the ink being examined and are, therefore, not reproducible. For example, a rough ink surface might be mistaken for poor particle dispersion quality. The problem thus presented is how to optically measure particle dispersion in magnetic inks without the ink surface limitations.
