By using limited duration blinking and character intersection, a user is
informed of a change in status of a currently active process in a multiple activity
In a multiple activity system, there is a need to inform the user of a change in
system status of a process which is not currently active, without distracting the
user from the current task.
Notification of a change of system components is done through limited
duration, slow blinking followed by the insertion of a character to mark the
process. For example, an indicator would be provided for an incoming message
box. When information was received, the indicator would blink for a brief period
and then would be marked with special brackets. Typically, the duration of blink
would be about f seconds and the frequency of blinking would be about two per
