A method is described which uses a help window to automate the search for the correct encoding of a Chinese character. When an operator of a data processing system encounters difficulty in encoding a Chinese character for input, a manual search is usually done based on the character's pronunciation represented by a set of Chinese phonetic symbols. It is tedious, time-consuming and disruptive of the main input operation. This method employs a program to automate this process, thus speeding up the procedure, and streamlining the input process. When an operator encounters a problem in encoding a Chinese character, he hits a help key. This causes a help window to be displayed and requests the operator to enter the Chinese phonetic symbols for that character.
