This publication describes an improvement in the speed of data flow processors. In data flow processors instructions are enabled for execution by the availability of their input operands. This instruction-enabling mechanism is far more complex than the instruction-enabling mechanism used in Von Neumann processors (which enable instructions in a sequence depending on the contents of the program counter). Due to the complexity of the instruction-enabling mechanism, the number of functional stages an instruction must go through in data flow processors is greater than that in Von Neumann processors.
