Abstract

In a system in which a driving pulley drives a belt around an idler pulley, the coefficient of friction of the idler pulley surface is lower than the coefficient of friction of the driving pulley surface. If, when the system is stationary, the idler pulley is unintentionally rotated, it will slip without moving the belt. This protects a delicate belt from being damaged.
