The telephone number 911 is commonly used for emergency telephone calls but in some areas a different number is used. Thus, a person who did not know the local emergency number might dial 911 and not reach an emergency telephone operator. In localities that use the 911 emergency number in situations where the caller dials the local emergency number correctly, the caller may be unable to report the telephone location to the emergency operator.
