A single coax connection can be used between a terminal controller and a remote fan-out box for a number of data terminal devices, such as keyboard displays and/or printers. The controller inserts a terminal device address on each outbound message which it transmits via the common coax. The fan-out box receives the messages from the coax and distributes them to the addressed terminal devices. In the described system, all traffic from the terminals to the controller is in direct response to a poll or other command received from the controller and intended for that terminal, and so it is not necessary to provide a terminal identification on such response.
